Are We Turning Readers Away?
January 21st, 2008 by Monika
Probably the biggest worry for any blogger would be to see his blog being mainly comment free. It is disheartening after all that hard work to see our blog devoid of any comment love by fellow bloggers and nobody likes to feel abandoned.
But what can we actually do to attract more comments and why don’t we get them in the first place?
I sometimes wondered why certain blog posts attracted a stream of comments and others simply didn’t? Did I suddenly fail to make contact with my readers?
I’m afraid the answer in those cases would be: Yes
Many factors play into the flow of writing a blog post that reads fluently enough and animates our readers to give their point of view at the end.
Sometimes regardless of what we do, there is simply no action and this could also be down to not having sufficient traffic. But what if we do have traffic and still nothing happens?
Here is what I found helps me to get better conversions:
- If I write posts that are informative and helpful I normally get tons of comments
- I also noticed that when I write from a more personal perspective my readers are much more responsive to me and are likely to comment more frequently.
- Interaction with my readers has always been a must for me. This means I pretty much answer every comment I receive. (Admittedly I do miss some for whatever reasons).
- Asking questions always helps. Most people do like to talk about themselves if given the chance and they will hop onto your comment thread if you ask them open ended questions.
- Easy navigation: if the blog is too cluttered or the posts are not attractive to the eye then nobody will stay long enough to even bother commenting.
Alternatively we might turn readers away from commenting:
- By not replying to your readers comments
- Being rude to them
- Being too authoritative (bossy)
- Closing the post with a command without inviting our readers to comment.
- Distracting them with plenty of ads
- Blog is slow/not attractive/hard to navigate
Are you happy with your comment numbers? Do you get enough comments on your blog or would you rather have more? What do you think we can do to have you comment more often on this blog? Please do let us know, your opinion matters to us.
