Will Your Blog Readers Follow Your Advice?

The other day Terry and I were exchanging some comments about his interlinking techniques. He then made a little joke:
But don’t tell everyone or they’ll all be doing it
However, some Internet marketers might not take things as lightly when it comes to “protecting” their tricks and tactics.
When Maki published an article about the mullet strategy, one of his readers said something about good secrets being unveiled. And I’m sure I’ve read similar comments on other blogs whose owners decided to share with their readers some powerful yet little-known techniques to generate traffic and/or income.
If I had any outstanding methods to share, I might feel worried as well. What if hundreds of webmasters, bloggers and Internet marketers did the same things and achieved even better results? Wouldn’t I risk being “left behind” in some sense? This possibility made me rather uneasy, and I spent a few days thinking about it.
Here is my conclusion: there is little to worry about.
Let’s face it: most people are lazy. Some aren’t lazy, but are skeptical. Others are too busy. Many lack self-discipline. And there are those who’ll just quit before any results can be seen.
I can include myself in all of the aforementioned categories. Inspiration has never been a problem for me; laziness has always been. I have tons of ideas, but I often refuse to take action because I get tired by simply thinking about the effort I’d have to put into each new project of mine. As you can imagine, this problem is directly related to lack of self-discipline, an old flaw that I’m struggling to overcome. Another associated issue is my tendency to quit too early. And even when I’m determined to go ahead and stick to a schedule, I still avoid certain methods because they sound too good to be true, no matter how reliable the person who suggested them is. Oh, did I mention my day job? It makes it harder for me to compete against full-time bloggers, writers and marketers.
See? These are just some of the many things that can hinder your typical readers from applying your successful techniques to their own endeavors. The sad truth is that most people will enjoy reading your articles, but will never follow your advice. Well, some will try, but the majority of those will fail for one reason or another.
So, if you have a good idea to share, don’t be afraid to write about it. If it’s tougher competition what you fear, you’re probably losing your sleep over an unrealistic threat. What’s worse, you might miss the chance to post better articles and attract loyal visitors.

You got it perfectly right Karen!
That was exactly what I meant when I said “don’t tell everybody…” because I knew full well that hardly anyone would take me up on my freebie!
Take Grizzly’s tutorial that I plugged in an earlier post. What a great technique to make money! Yet I bet very few people are actually putting that into action even after reading his words of wisdom. Far too many people as you rightly said would find it to be too much work.
BTW, I’m not one of the many - but one of the few…

How true Karen,
I don’t know how many times I’ve told people step by step how to do something just to have them write me back and ask if there was an easier way or worse - could I do it for them!
I’m as lazy as they get but I have found that a few little successes seem to keep me moving forward in spite of myself. I definitely have a tendency to over think something to the point I never actually get around to doing it.
BTW Karen you have a wonderful writing style - please write more.
Oh Terry… careful with that “wisdom” thing or I may have to start listing my 5 year old daughter’s “just how stupid my dad is” list.
Here’s one - just how does one go about becoming a contributing author on here - assuming you would have me?

I second Grizzly’s comment about your writing style Karen. You have a gift that can help you in your online ventures. Make sure you nurture it!
In conjunction with your post, I so agree that most people are lazy. I’m a lazy person myself but beware when a fire has light under my bum that keeps me going 12+ hours a day.
I guess it is true for most, that as long as we simply wish for something to happen nothing will. But work for it and work hard at it and things will happen.
That is why those who do work toward their dreams and aspirations are always a step ahead, even if everybody in the world had the same knowledge and would be given the golden key, most people would be too slack sporting too many excuses on why the key doesn’t fit.

I’ve just read The Secret, so actually (according to the book) the real truth is that all you have to do is tell the universe you want something and you will get it. Well I tried it and…
When I first moved to Spain 5 years ago I actually ran out of money - completely. I owned my mountainside farm outright so didn’t have to worry about that and there were no bills to pay, so all I needed was food on the table for me and my dog.
I used to sit on a rock and meditate and tell myself that everything would be ok and I’d always have enough money to live. Well, when the euros didn’t drop out of the sky for a while, I decided the best thing to do would be to go down to the coast and busk!
I actually made enough doing that to live on until I joined the band that turned it all around for me and through that ended up where I am today…
In a great relationship, living on the coast, making enough money offline to live while working hard at my online business and watching it grow into something that will make me financially secure for a long time to come.
So in some ways, The Secret has its merits, but if you want something to really happen, you have to get off your backside (or your rock) and make it happen!
